October, 1945 - Operation Black Banner

One division of Japanese soldiers refused to surrender when their emperor did. They were deeply entrenched on the Horizon Islands, specifically Tanoa. In September the Russians tried to take the island, unsuccessfully. In October the USMC invaded with a special unit under the designation 23rd MEU. They managed to capture the island, though sustained heavy losses. As this was after the war the operation was kept top secret from the world. Russia, using a captured B29 from the war, dropped their own atomic bomb just over Georgetown while the US Marines were cleaning up the last of Japanese Defenders.
